What are the implications of the ongoing refugee migration for European regions and cities? Find the answers in ESPON policy brief "Territorial and urban aspects of migration and refugee inflow", and to which CEMR contributed.

Digital Single Market - 11.12.2015

"While digitalisation can foster more jobs and improve citizens' well-being, it impacts directly the local and regional governments and their employees, for instance, in terms of skills, training, infrastructure or the forms of work. Spectacular wealth gains that digitalisation is expected to generate must be redistributed fairly among all members of society."
This is in substance the message addressed by CEMR and its partner from the social dialogue, EPSU, in a press release on 11 December. It follows a joint declaration on the opportunities and challenges of digitalisation in public administration. -

Women leadership at local level: a requirement to fight against climate change
“As a woman leader I encourage us all to take development challenges into our own hands,” said the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, at the meeting on women leadership in development organised by our global association (UCLG), on 6 December, in the city hall of Paris.
Organised in the margins of the COP21 negotiations, the event gathered local elected representatives worldwide to put forward the gender equality approach in the fight against climate change, to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and to shape sustainable urban policies.

CEMR former executive president takes office as prime minister
Following general elections on 4 October, CEMR former executive president, António Costa, was appointed prime minister of Portugal.
Mr Costa was mayor of Lisbon for three terms since 2007. He is now tasked with forming a government.

The European Entrepreneurial Region (EER) rewards EU regions which show an innovative entrepreneurial policy strategy, irrespective of their size, wealth and competences. The awarded regions will be granted the label "European Entrepreneurial Region" for a specific year.

eGovernment - 20.11.2015
European Commission launches a public consultation on its next action plan 2016-2020
The rapid change in digital technologies and the way it is used by the society requires a modernisation of the public sector across the EU. To this aim, the European Commission plans to present a new eGovernment Action Plan for the 2016-2020 period.
With this public consultation, the Commission wants to collect the needs, requirements and expectations of those directly involved in the delivering of public services, hence local and regional governments.
The deadline to participate is 22 January 2016. -
Energy Union - 18.11.2015
A first annual report on the state of play on energy policies
The first annual report shows that much progress has already been made at the regional, national and European level in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, the use of domestic energy sources as well as research and projects funding.
The state of the Energy Union was presented by Commissioner for Energy Union Maroš Šefčovič during a press conference on 18 November. The Commission has committed to present these reports annually to take stock of the progress made on energy policies.
