Bilbao to host our conference on equality in 2018
Under the theme “Equality, diversity & inclusion”, the city of Bilbao and the Basque association of municipalities (EUDEL) will bring together local elected representatives, civil society, academia and CEMR associations to discuss the transformation of the social landscape in Europe.
During the CEMR Policy Committee (in Maastricht, 12-13 December), the mayor of Bilbao, Juan Maria Aburto, presented the goals of the conference that will take place in June 2018:
• to prepare our towns and regions to take the lead in tackling discrimination and inequalities,
• to promote social inclusion and diversity.
On the occasion of the CEMR Policy Committee, CEMR members also held a debate on the 10th anniversary of the Charter on gender equality.

President De la Serna joins Spanish government
The mayor of Santander and CEMR president, Iñigo De la Serna, has joined the Spanish government as Minister for Public Works and Transport. He was nominated on 4 November 2016.
Who will be the next CEMR President? She or he will be elected in Maastricht on 12 December 2016 by the CEMR Policy Committee, which is made up of over 170 local and regional elected representatives, nominated by national member associations and national sections of CEMR.
We wish Mr De la Serna great success in his new mission as Minister for Public Works and Transport; a field in which local and regional governments’ implication is of the utmost importance. -

President of CEMR's Norwegian association reappointed for a second term
The president of the Norwegian Association of Local and Regional Authorities (KS), Gunn Marit Helgesen, was today reelected for a second four-year term. She succeeded Halvdan Skard in February 2012 as chair of the association.

Congress President’s congratulation to newly elected President of the CEMR
"I warmly congratulate you on your unanimous election as President of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions", said president of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities (Council of Europe), Herwig van Staa, in a letter addressed to Annemarie Jorritsma on 19 December. He underlined the common priorities and goals shared by both organisations and stressed the Congress will pursue a close co-operation with CEMR. "We are both working to defend and advance local and regional democracy in Europe and to strengthen partnerships and political dialogue between national, regional and local authorities and their national associations. I have no doubt our organisations will continue this work under your mandate with a close and fruitful collaboration", he added. Mrs Jorritsma was elected President of the CEMR on December 2013 for a three-year term of office.
