Local elections - 06.06.2016
Bucharest (Romania) elects its first woman mayor
On Sunday 5 June, local elections took place in Romania. The Social Democrats (PSD) won the most votes: between 39% and 44% according to the latest results.
The new mayor of Bucharest is Gabriela Firea (PSD), who won 43.56% of the vote. She is the first woman to ever be elected as mayor of the Romanian capital. -

First round of local elections in Italy
The first round of the Italian local elections took place on Sunday 5 June in about 1,300 Italian towns and cities.
The results are out for some of the major Italian cities:
Rome: Virginia Raggi (5 Star Movement) is leading with 35.4%
Naples: Luigi di Magistris (left-wing independent) is in the lead with 42.4% of the vote
Milan: Giuseppe Sala (PD) has 41.6%
Turin: Piero Fassino (PD) has won the first round with 41,2% of the vote.
The second round will take place on 19 June. -

On 17 May 2016, elected representatives and other stakeholders from towns and regions gathered at a CITYnvest seminar in Vilnius, Lithuania to discuss just that.
This event was co-organised by CITYnvest and the Association of Local Authorities in Lithuania.

European city receives special mention for “International Award UCLG – Mexico City – Culture 21”
A European city has received a special mention for the “International Award UCLG – Mexico City – Culture 21” this year:
Kaunas (Lithuania), for its project that mobilised citizens to transform a polluted and uncared place through artistic co-creation activities.
This international award is given to leading cities and people that have made a significant contribution to culture as a dimension of sustainable development.

Italian towns and regions are invited to the next seminar on energy efficiency renovation in public buildings
CITYnvest is inviting Italian local and regional governments and stakeholders to a seminar to discuss innovative financing instruments for energy efficiency renovations in public buildings.
The seminar will take place in Milan, Italy, on Wednesday 25 May 2016 and aims to deepen knowledge through inspiring case studies from Italy and around Europe, identify barriers and how to overcome them, and encourage partnership building.

BBC invests in local news
The BBC has decided to fund 150 local news journalists. Starting in 2017, these journalists will be employed by news organisations around the UK to cover local governments and public services.
This initiative is an example of how the importance of local governments is increasingly being recognised.

Urban agenda, migration: European Commission for regional policy listened to local governments
“We should review the way how the principle of governance in partnership worked in the management of the refugee crisis as well as the access of towns and regions to European funds,” said CEMR Policy Officer - Governance and Citizenship, Carlos Mascarell, during the meeting organised by the Commissioner for regional affairs, Corina Creţu, with representatives from regional offices in Brussels.
During the meeting participants addressed four topics of importance for local government and in which CEMR is strongly involved: migration, the EU Urban Agenda, the simplification for beneficiaries of EU funds and the future of Cohesion Policy.

Launch of an online platform to promote international mobility
Are you a territorial civil servant? Have you ever dreamt about participating in a mobility programme either in Europe or abroad?
If your answer is yes, then there is a new website available for you. Launched by the National Institute for Territorial Studies in France, the online platform gathers news, articles, videos and further visual material explaining the different possibilities as well as the assets of international mobility.
The online platform is only available in French.
